File formats, rules, images
During the class, I learned about the different file formats, pixels, the rule of thirds and the like. I learned about choosing the appropriate formats/extensions for different files such as images, files, videos and sounds. The most distinct formats used for images are jpg/jpeg, png and gif. A jpg can support up to 16.8 million colors while a gif can support up to 256 colors. Both gif and png can support transparency and animation. There are also 2 types of formats: Lossy and Lossless. Lossy compression reduces a file by permanently eliminating certain information. With lossless compression, every single bit of data that was originally in the file remains after the file is uncompressed. I also learned about the origin of the word "pixel" which is picture and element combined together. A pixel is the basic part of an image. The colorspaces suitable for pixels are Adobe RGB, sRGB and CMYK. There are 2 types of images: Raster & Vector. A raster image is bitmap-based and is resolution dependent while a vector image is made up of lines and is resolution independent. I have also found out about the different rules such as the rule of thirds, the golden ratio, the golden mask and the golden spiral.
